17th ANNUAL SCULPTURE IN THE GARDEN June 17 – July 16, 2011 

Presented by The Ruth Bancroft Garden 

 

About the Garden: The Ruth Bancroft Garden is a vibrant example of exceptional garden design. The garden features an impressive collection of succulents, cacti and other drought tolerant plants, and it is recognized throughout the world as a fine example of dry gardening. It provides a spectacular backdrop for artists to display their sculpture throughout the garden, along its broad gravel pathways. 

 

About the Exhibit: Now in its 17th year, Sculpture In The Garden is a month-long exhibit and fundraiser for The Ruth Bancroft Garden. The show includes the work of approximately 40 – 50 sculptors from Northern California. Each artist is invited to display multiple pieces during the month-long event. The Kickoff Weekend also includes a Marketplace Section with craft vendors. Nearly 1,000 visitors attend during the Kickoff Weekend. Our total sales goal for this year is $40,000. 

 

Location: The garden is located two miles east of the Walnut Creek BART station. The address is 1552 Bancroft Road, Walnut Creek, California 94598. The website address is www.ruthbancroftgarden.org. 

 

Eligibility: Open to Northern California sculptors who wish to show and sell free-standing sculptures of all media that are appropriate for outdoor garden weather conditions. Be aware that there will be some exposure to irrigation sprinklers and artwork may occasionally get wet. Wall pieces and electrified works are not feasible in this venue in most cases. 

 

Sales Information: This exhibition is a fundraiser for the garden. Artists will receive 65% of the sale price, so this deduction should be factored in to the listed price. In the last three years, art sales have ranged from $31,000 - $41,000 per year. The majority of pieces that sell are priced below $1,000. 

 

Preview Party & Kickoff Weekend: The month-long event begins with a Preview Party on Friday, June 17 at 5:30 – 8 p.m. featuring live music, food and wine. This is the ideal time to meet our major art buyers and to make early sales. Artists will receive one free ticket and may purchase one half price ticket for the Preview Party. Additional full-price tickets are available for purchase through the RBG website or through the Garden Office. The Kickoff Weekend continues on Saturday – Sunday, June 18 – 19 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Artists are encouraged to be present during the Kickoff Weekend when the majority of sales occur. The Kickoff Weekend also includes a Marketplace Section with craft vendors. 

 

To Enter: Artists should submit a representative selection of their work, and are encouraged to submit several of their selected works that are priced below $1,000. Send the completed entry form and either photos or digital images [on a CD] of the actual or representative sculptures you wish to bring to the sale. Entries must be postmarked by March 7, 2011. Selection criteria: Preference will be given to work that is compatible with the garden environment, including scale and color and sturdiness. 

 

Notification of acceptance: Artists will be notified by email (or snail mail if no email is provided) the week of March 21, 2011.

Security: The garden is located in a populated area. There is a fenced perimeter and a locked gated entrance to the garden. Artists

assume all risk of loss or damage to artwork. 

 

Terms of agreement: Submission of work constitutes an agreement to the conditions set forth above and acceptance that the decisions of the Sculpture Exhibit Committee are final. The Ruth Bancroft Garden may photograph and reproduce accepted work for promotional purposes. Artists may not withdraw accepted entries before the close of the exhibition. Submitted entry form images must reflect and accurately represent your work. If not, it may be rejected at time of installation. Artists are responsible for installing their own work in the location selected by the Sculpture Exhibit Committee and for providing weather resistant pedestals if needed. All artwork must be for sale.
