Bay Area “scientific artist” Paul Baker presents his constructed sculptures and multiaward-
winning artist Chris Angell showcases his found-object sculptures in their
“Celestial Navigation” show at the famous Live Worms Gallery, an independent North
Beach gallery noted for hosting numerous local artists and celebrities including Lawrence
Ferlinghetti.
The show’s title, “Celestial Navigation”, refers to travel (real and metaphysical), stars,
and finding one’s way through a situation, plus seeing markers or signals (even if
invisible to others) and using them for guidance. Actual celestial navigation was
employed by clipper ships—and even contemporary yachts before radar—to navigate at
night via star positions.
Filling the gallery will be a dozen works of art, including wall pieces and 3-D sculptures.
The window display will feature a miniature planetarium installation, in an homage to the
famous assemblage artist Joseph Cornell (1903-1972), whom both Baker and Angell
credit as a major influence.
