‘Being’ is the unavoidable expression of one’s true persona. It is trying to live one’s truth while living with the skeletons in the closet. It’s a constant flow between inner voices screaming the loudest (i.e., what we really want) and actions speaking louder than words (i.e., behavior supporting desired outcome), sometimes in harmony and sometimes in discord. Simply put, ‘being’ means that at all times we affect, and are affected by, everything and everyone in our environment.
This exhibit, however, is not about judging ourselves or others, per se, although each artist presents an opinion through their works just as each viewer provides unique interpretation. The opportunity to observe another ‘being’ for a moment in time as revealed by the sensitivities of each artist is the thematic aegis. It is meant to provide narrative snapshots of others ‘being’ in order to illuminate potentialities and reactions to life conditions.
In the process of experiencing the world, our unique observations are informed by vignettes from the larger narrative of the lives of others. As we watch, we see the drama of their ‘being’ played out through actions and emotional responses. As we watch, we compare others ‘being’ against our own presuppositions and known way of ‘being’. As we watch, we learn.
